Our sense of hearing allows us to listen and understand sounds. It is located in our ears. If there are issues with hearing, it can be difficult to hear conversations, follow instructions, or respond to sounds around us.
Our sense of taste helps us enjoy different flavours in food. It is located on our taste buds on the tongue. If there are problems with taste, it might be hard to tell different tastes apart or have a limited interest in trying new foods.
Our sense of smell helps us detect different scents and odours. It is located in our nose. If there are issues with smell, it can be hard to recognize certain smells or associate them with memories.
Our sense of touch allows us to feel things like textures, temperatures, and pain. It is located all over our skin. If there are problems with tactile processing, it might be hard to tolerate certain textures, feel pain appropriately, or have difficulty with fine motor skills.
This sense allows us to perceive the position, movement, and orientation of our body in space without relying on sight. Proprioception is what allows us to touch our nose with our eyes closed. When the proprioceptive sense is not working correctly, individuals may experience difficulties with motor planning, coordination, balance, body awareness, and fine motor skills.
Our sense of vestibular helps us maintain balance and know our body’s position in relation to gravity. It is located in our inner ear. If there are problems with vestibular processing, it can be hard to balance, feel dizzy or off-balance, or struggle with certain movements.
Our sense of interoception helps us sense what is happening inside our bodies, like hunger, thirst, or emotions. It is located throughout our body. If there are issues with interoception, it might be difficult to recognize hunger or fullness, understand and manage emotions, or respond appropriately to internal cues.
